The best scientific evidence at this time indicates that these
"mushroom-shaped" structures are aerial lignotubers, which were
vegetative reproductive structures that
arose in the axils of leaves in response to injury, such as fire
(Dernbach, 2002).
The specimen above was put together from material that came from the same deposit. However, the association of the seperate pieces is not natural. At some mineral and fossil shows one can find Jurassic aged Patagonia cones glued to Triassic age Madagascar wood. The person who was selling this material was upfront about the nature of his artwork. |
