| The drawing was inspired by an 1881 photograph of Darwin standing on the veranda at Down House taken by Elliot and Fry of London. Darwin was seventy-two when the photograph was taken. The photograph is housed in the Darwin Archive at Cambridge University Library (Berra, 2009, p. 79). |
